Ecological Dwellings

The spaces we dwell within shape our lives.

Echoing the contours of nature to the foreground textures of furniture.

Humans are designed to inhabit earth and earth is designed to be inhabited by humans.

The Coffee Table

The body of this table is made from sustainably harvested local Tulip Poplar, free to expand and contract with its soft thick live edges. In contrast, the structure is defined by the enduring Locust, with vertical hardwood breadboards mortised using through tenons and capped to allow for natural wood movement without stressing the joinery.Dyed with water and natural pigments from the earth and sealed with plant-based, naturally hardening oils and wax from bees, this table is held together with glue derived from the muscles of mammals. Every ingredient in this table will one day decompose back into the earth without introducing toxicity to the cycle of life and death. It is a genuine article of its time and place, an ecologically sound expression of human creativity.

Holistic Ecological Designs

At Tayyib Goods, we practice Holistic Ecological Design, which requires designers to consider thought-provoking questions about their existence and relationship with the environment. The designer's stance on religious, philosophical, and metaphysical matters is an important factor in the design process. Our design approach takes into account the needs of both humans and the environment, and we aim to create products that are ecologically sound and beneficial to both. The design process is a journey of discovery, as we strive to find the best solution that incorporates the intrinsic nature of local building materials. While no human-made design is perfect, we are aware of the limitations and make compromises to balance design and cost considerations. To mitigate the impact of our supply chain, we contribute 1% of our earnings to environmental initiatives.

Local
Our lumber, bamboo, clay, and stone are all sourced locally, and more than 75% of our sales are to local customers.
Working with local materials and customers offers us many advantages.
For example, we have a closer relationship with our local environment and have a greater understanding of our impact on it. We have developed connections with the forests, fungi, and people in the area, which has allowed us to make better-informed decisions.
Working locally also results in lower transportation costs, both financially and environmentally. Local sourcing supports decentralized support structures and strengthens human-to-human connections, resulting in a more meaningful experience.

Processing
Efficiency is crucial in holistic design, as it helps us save energy, reduce waste of time, and eliminate the need for large machinery. We collaborate closely with local sawmills to ensure that the material we receive is rough-sawn to our exact specifications. We preserve the story of each tree by applying the minimum amount of force necessary. Our surfaces are sanded and carved with meticulous care, creating pronounced grain that can be appreciated both visually and by touch.
